The Sound Archive (hljodsafn.landsbokasafn.is) preserves and provides access to sound recordings stored in the National and University Library of Iceland.
The Sound Archive consists of digital copies of commercially published Icelandic sound recordings (records, CDs, cassette tapes and web-publications) along with interviews archived by the Centre of Oral History.
The Sound Archive is not exhaustive but digital conversion is ongoing.
In accordance with an agreement with the Performing Rights Society of Iceland (STEF), dated July 9, 2018, the National and University Library of Iceland may grant access in its Sound Archive to short digital sound excerpts (20–25 seconds) from copyrighted sound recordings.
Any further use or publication of these sound excerpts is prohibited without an official consent from STEF or a copyright owner.
Guests at the National and University Library of Iceland can listen on-site to copyrighted sound recordings unabbreviated.
In accordance with an agreement between the Icelandic Society of Authors and Composers and the National and University Library of Iceland, dated November 4, 2018, the Library is allowed to make accessible photographs of album covers, CD brochures, graphics and other material that accompanies recordings that are available online at the Library.
